about

I wrote this song for my dad, just after he passed in 2010.

lyrics

Who was that masked man?
Was he a star casting light and shadow?
Or a child fast asleep when the lights went down
Dreaming of a brighter time than now?

O, I know this doesn't say it at all

Did he sing a song that gave a joy
That he could never know?
And did he always keep them laughing
So the wound would never show?
Did he try to build a life upon the ashes of the past
Believing if he did, he could escape its empty grasp?

O, I know this doesn't say it at all

I know that, given time, there will be so much more to say
The pain that's much too near now will begin to fade away
Somewhere behind the mask, I know there was only a man
And only when the song ends do I begin to understand
